wil vs Trydnt
SDG ladder, game number 35689
(SDG record here)
November 7-14, 2019
In 2018, wil suffered a near-fatal injury.
The aftereffects could have easily made it impossible to play Homeworlds at a high level.
In this game, wil regained the top place on the SDG Homeworlds ladder,
proving that they were still fighting fit.
Trydnt chooses an instafreeze opening.
wil's response to the instafreeze is to press the green advantage. It may be difficult for wil to get any blue ships, and Trydnt may get a size advantage by getting access to the medium and large blues first.
In this game, both players prefer to use system names that are indistinguishable from the name of the star piece. This makes SDG notation look strange. The first "b3" is the piece type while the second "b3" is the name of the system.
I'm not sure what Trydnt hopes to do with this move.
Maybe they want to scare wil's smaller ship away from the y3 system
so that Trydnt can claim it as an investment.
But Trydnt has no red, so that threat is hollow.
Or Trydnt might want to prevent wil from building another green in wil's home
since the g2 in y3 threatens to overpopulate.
But wil could just build greens in the y3 or b3 system instead,
In any case, wil's next move seems to show that 7... is a mistake.
Not only does this exchange put wil further ahead in material,
it removes Trydnt's only green ship, so wil makes up part of their diversity deficit.
For even greater material advantage, it may have been stronger to keep the factory-built greens,
for example, by building g2 in the b3 system, g3 in y3, and g3 in wil.
By choosing yellow stars for their colonies, Trydnt isn't creating more places to build. They can still only build ships in their home.
wil has kept Trydnt from getting any large blue ships by using the b3 pieces as stars. This should also give wil some good opportunities for growth and diversification: wil can build greens and trade them for other colors in four places. These large stars occupied by greens may also be useful as investments.
Trydnt has moved and traded ships to get two colonies with green, but it's too late. wil gobbles up the last of the blue and green pieces, giving them many growth and diversification opportunities.
wil easily shuts down Trydnt's invasion of the b2 colony by acquiring a bigger ship. wil's position is truly overpowering.
Trydnt blocks wil from building another y3 and sets wil up for the "tricky" Bluebird mistake. Sacrificing the y1 was necessary to prevent wil from catastrophe-ing Trydnt's only large ship.
wil simultaneously defends against the Bluebird and gathers even more material.
Trydnt's position is rather hopeless in any case, but this poor move brings a quick end to the game.
