Beta (East) to play

Show a hint

This is a very difficult puzzle. If you think that Beta can win in two or three turns, you've missed something and should keep looking.

Show another hint

Beta can't quite win and needs to play for a draw.

Show solution

Alpha
Beta
1...
move r2 Altair Alpha
2.
attack r2 Alpha
2....
sacrifice y2 Altair
move r3 Beta Altair
move r3 Altair Alpha
3.
sacrifice y3 Betelgeuse
move r1 Betelgeuse Altair
move r3 Castor Altair
move r2 Castor Altair
catastrophe Altair r
3....
attack r2 Alpha
4.
attack r2 Alpha
4....
attack r2 Alpha

(etc.)

Many players in Alpha's position would fail to see the correct play on move 3 (a move that loses four ships to destroy one is likely to be dismissed out of hand). So besides being the unique line where Beta can force a draw, Beta's plan above stands a good chance of winning if Alpha makes a mistake.

Alpha's other defenses are no better, such as

2.
sacrifice y1 Alpha
move y3 Betelgeuse Alpha
2...
sacrifice y2 Altair
move r2 Altair Alpha
discover r1 Beta y3 Deneb

and Beta will win on their next turn.

Beta's other lines of attack end up losing. For example, if Beta tries to invade with their second r2 instead of their r3:

1...
move r2 Altair Alpha
2.
attack r2 Alpha
2...
move r2 Altair Alpha
3.
sacrifice r2 Alpha
attack r2 Alpha
pass

Or if Beta goes for the yellow fleet catastrophe:

1...
move y2 Altair Alpha
2.
sacrifice y2 Alpha
move y3 Betelgeuse Alpha
move y1 Alpha Castor

Or if Beta starts the invasion with r3:

1...
sacrifice y2 Altair
move r3 Beta Altair
move r3 Altair Alpha
2.
sacrifice y2 Betelgeuse
move r1 Betelgeuse Altair
move r2 Castor Altair
catastrophe Altair r
2...
attack y2 Alpha
3.
sacrifice y3 Betelgeuse
move r3 Betelgeuse Alpha
move r3 Castor Altair
move r3 Altair Beta
3...
attack r3 Alpha
4.
attack r1 Beta

This position is from a ladder game on SDG where Beta was challenging Alpha for position #1. SDG user Draw5PlayAll helped me with the analysis.

At this point in the actual game, Beta played

1...
discover r1 Beta y3 Deneb

and probably intended to continue with

2...
sacrifice y2 Altair
move r2 Altair Alpha
move r2 Altair Alpha
3...
move r1 Deneb Alpha
catastrophe Alpha r

but Alpha won quickly after

2.
sacrifice y2 Betelgeuse
move r1 Betelgeuse Altair
move r2 Castor Altair
catastrophe Altair r

Note that the SDG website does not allow Homeworlds games to end in a draw for any reason, so even if Beta recognized that playing for a draw was best, the site could not have recorded such a result. The players would have simply alternated captures until one of them resigned.
